Originally when I had contacted the filmmakers about reviewing their film I got a message from (I believe) The director Adam Bolt stating that he didnt think his film really fell into the genre or category we deal with on this site. I assured him if it was a good indie film it would fit perfectly into what we are looking to do with this site. With a little more prodding he agreed to send the film to me to take a look at.
While this film isn't horror in the general sense of the word....It still has a very fantasy styled world with horrific elements in it. I will let everyone know that this film does not contain buckets of gore....what it does contain is originality and atmosphere.
The title of the film won't make sense to most until you finally see the finished film as alot of stuff is answered once you see the film. The most notable thing to me that became immediatly apparent was the visual flair and style this film posseses. It's like looking at a demented illustration in a classic childrens book. This is probably the closest thing to art i have ever seen in this genre. The best way I can describe this film is visually haunting and stimulating at the same time. I have to mention that it has a veryu japanese feel and flow to it as well.
In fact the whole feel of the film has a very grim fairy tales feel to it and I will go out on a limb and say this is the most beautiful films I have ever viewed. Every frame is perfect and maintains the feel of the film. The great acting in the film just adds to the film in spades as this was the perfect casting for this film and it feels like everyone involved in the project totally "got" the film and what the director was trying to do.
The fact that adam bolt did this film as his first project and with a very low budget astounds me. I can't wait to see what he can accomplish in the future as his budgets and his skills increase.
This is what indie film is supposed to be about! The story kept me gripped and emotionally invested in the film and their well being throughout. The visuals were so arresting that you couldnt take your eyes from the screen. I know I keep going back to this but the film is like a cross between a fairy tale and a nightmare as told by tim burton.......but it's always engrossing and entertaining.
The worst thing you could do is write this film off for not being a horror film....You would be missing the best indie film of 2007 and maybe beyond. This film will keep you visually and emotionally stimulated for the entire running time and when it's over you'll be left wanting more of this world and the characters it inhabits! SIMPLY AMAZING!
