When I first recieved this movie I wasnt in the biggest of rushes to watch it as Im not a big fan of vampire moviews as its is and pretty much everything you can do in a vgampire movie has been done better by other movies in the past!
I was quite suprised when the film by the fact that it actually reminded me of some scenes from the classic film VERSUS. Immediatly you could tell this was shot with a high quality camera and the person behind it knew what he wanted to get. The picture was beautiful and the shots were framed in such a way to keep your eyes glued to the screen.
It also struck me that the level of acting by all the people involved with the film was high and also helped to keep you interested made you care for the characters. Although about 10 or so minutes into the film during the first kill scene I noticed that the main characters tag on his sweater was sticking out only to have it disappear in the next shot.........I only bring this up because it worried me that maybe this wasnt as carefully constructed movie as I initially thought. Thankfully I was wrong and this was the only real glaring incident and can be expected in some low budget films.
This brings me into the area fof special effects.......I was initially impressed with the formula they used for blood as it looked realy good. Then as the film goes on you notice that all the real gore, blood spray and knive slashes were done in CG....... This to me is one of the worst things you can do as it immediatly took me out of the story and made some of the effects seem kind of lazy.
Beyond the effects snafu I found this film to be completly engaging and a good character study as well. It was well filmed, framed, acted, edited, and written.....quite the accomplishment for under $1000. If your thinking of becoming a filmmaker this would be good to use as a kind of text book on how to do it right. (except for the CGI......)
I cant wait to see what else this group of young filmmakers come up with and what they can do with a bigger budget. I can also honestly say I would like to see this idea expanded on and maybe flesh out the mythos a little more in future installments.
All in all I have to say this was an enjoyable movie with some really good shock moments and the characters are so well written youll care for them within the first 20 minutes. The only thing I would have like to see is maybe 15 minutes cut out to keep the pacing going at a little faster clip as some of the scenes can drag out a little.
This film is a classic example of how to do a vampire movie right.......Slayer is the most Original Vampire film Ive seen since the original Lost Boys and thats saying alot. Grab some fellow horror fans get this film and youll enjoy the hell outta it! It really is a modern day classic in the Vampire genre!
